7-0 Poster

Another old poster that I have that's in surprisingly good shape! It came out of MOTD magazine years ago, and depicts the period of showboating at the end of the famous 7-0 win over Southampton.

"To say that Leeds are playing with Southampton is the understatement of the season! It's almost cruel!"

Crap Loanees as Pro-Wrestlers #3

O'Dean Malenko:

*I have to admit, I don't think O'Dea is as bad as everyone made out... don't get me wrong, he certainly had some absolutely horrible mistakes in him, but he was by no means the worst defender we've had in the last few years.

The Scoreboard Men

Off to Elland Road this afternoon, and looking at the old pictures thread on WACCOE has me reminiscing about the three little fellas that used to appear on the scoreboard after a goal! I loved those guys!

A quick google search also led to the discovery of this:

Ok, I know it says Watford, but it's very similar!

Corinthians, 96-97 Back Four.

Gary Kelly, David Wetherall, Richard Jobson, Tony Dorigo utd

I've entitled this post 96-97 back four, but a bit of research suggests that these four may have never played together as a back four in a competitive game.

Unless I'm mistaken, they were only all on the pitch together once, vs Leicester in 1996, and even then, Dorigo only came on as sub. I think Kelly also may spent much of the season in GG's ultra defensive midfield, tho it's hard to tell, because team sheets from that era seem to include at least 7 or 8 players who you would call defenders!

The choice of who to caricature must have been pretty difficult for Corinthian to make this season! Ultimately, Jobson fell out of favour, and was replaced in the side by Molenaar, Dorigo missed a fair chunk of the season injured, and even Wetherall was in and out of the team.

I'll post some of the other Corinthians from that season (including a dreadful likeness of Lee Bowyer) another time.

Yeboah vs Liverpool drawing

Tony Yeboah Leeds United utd vs Liverpool 1-0 draw specialist

Found this drawing online, and instantly loved it.

This sketch, and many more like it (tho sadly, I've not found any more Leeds related ones) comes from a section of FourFourTwo's website called 'The Draw Specialist'.

Out of his depth?

Snoddy wouldn't have dreamed of leaving Leeds for Norwich in 1996! (and not just because he was only 9 at the time)

Crap Loanees as Pro Wrestlers #2

Marlon 'King' Lawler:

Leeds united jerry lawler wwe wwf

So, aside from being a general scumbag, how did King earn his 'Crap Loanee' status? Well, 9 games without a goal from a centre forward, including a missed penalty, should be explanation enough. Add to this the fact that he scored a shedload the next season for Watford, as they beat us to promotion and you have it.

Some may argue that his being a crap loanee is down to Blackwell, and his pesky habit of playing good forwards out wide... and if I liked King, I might make that point. But I don't. So I won't.

World Cup 1970 Medals, England.

Terry Cooper, Paul Reaney, Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Leeds United

Great find at my Mum's house! A complete set of Esso 1970 World Cup Medals, that my Dad collected! I'll post pics of the other Leeds players included another time, but for now, here's the famous Revie back four.

Paul Reaney ended up missing the World Cup due to a broken leg sustained in the run in of the 69-70 League season, while Charlton and Hunter only managed one appearance each at the Finals.

Terry Cooper, on the other hand played every minute of England's campaign, which ended with defeat against Germany in the Quarter Final.

Lucic Red Card, Sweden

Leeds United sweden

Poor old Teddy!

As if getting sent off for your country isn't bad enough, he had to endure this muppet of a ref grinning at him while it happened.

Lucic was signed for Leeds by Terry Venables, on a season long loan in 2002. He played all the way across the back 4 throughout the season, and scored his only Leeds goal in a 3-2 defeat away at Chelsea.

Corinthians: David Batty, England

Leeds United England

Sticking with the International break theme, here's David Batty, in England colours.

Batts earnt 42 England caps, 19 of them in his two spells at Leeds.

His list of international honours is short, but (ahem) impressive. Wiki lists them as: Le Tournoi de France, Winner; The Umbro Cup, Runner up; The King Hassan II International cup, Runner up.

Leeds/England XI

With an International weekend of fixtures upon us, here is a starting XI of players that played for England while at Leeds.

Robinson, Ferdinand, Woodgate Cooper, and Fowler are on the bench... Mick Jones could take the place of Alan Smith upfront, but I thought of him after making the image, and couldn't be bothered redoing it! Same with Reaney for Mills!

And who else, but Don Revie for manager!

Crap Loanees as Pro Wrestlers

How I've been looking forward to introducing this feature! (Yep, it's gonna be a regular!)

I'm aware that it may not have the widest potential audience, but it was just too much fun not to include.

Anyway, without further ado, I give you the first of the series:

Roque Maivia!

Rocky Maivia, the Rock, Leeds United, WWE WWF

Roque is well deserving of his 'Crap Loanee' status. He was a key figure in the 4-0 defeat against relegation certainties Leicester, received a red card on his home debut, and, to summarise, was part of a defence that conceded 24 in 7 games.

The one Roque performance that may be remembered with something approaching fondness is the League cup game with Man U, where he scored twice... but we ended up losing 3-2, so, ultimately, it probably won't.

Bonus Post!

This is the first time I've posted twice in a day on this blog.

My reason for this is, frankly, to draw attention to one of my other blogs; the six word one. If you haven't had a look at it before, it's linked in the 'about me' section.

Anyway, one of the features of aforementioned blog was to review, or try to sum up in some way every Leeds game I've been to this year (or watched on TV) in 6 words.

Today being my first Leeds game of the season (due to the business and financial constraints of my PGCE course) means that today is also the day of my first Leeds related 6 word post for some time.

So, without further ado, here are all the posts from 'In 6 words' that are tagged with Leeds United.

And just for a little extra treat, here's a picture of Billy Painter.
